Stories from the Field Part 2: A Civilian Evacuated Against All Odds
In another story from the 12th Territorial Defense Brigade, the ambulance crew was able to evacuate a severely wounded civilian with the help of the same ambulance from last weeks story!
After returning from transporting someone with non-life-threatening injuries, the crew spotted a man on a bicycle frantically calling for help on an open highway. Beside him lay a 55-year-old woman in a wheelbarrow, gravely wounded from shelling in her village.
Without hesitation, the crew lifted her into their Mercedes Sprinter ambulance and began lifesaving treatment as they raced toward safety.
Mid-evacuation, smoke poured from beneath the hood and then flames erupted. Exposed on an open road and under the threat of drone attacks, the driver leapt out, extinguisher in hand, and battled the fire while the medic fought to keep the patient alive. Nearby soldiers rushed to help, and together they pushed the vehicle back into service, determined to complete the mission.
The woman reached the hospital in Dobropillia alive and stabilized. Her long-term outcome remains unknown, but thanks to the crew’s courage, and the support that keeps these ambulances running, she has a fighting chance.
These two stories offer a glimpse into the daily courage of Ukraine’s defenders and medics, reminding us why every vehicle, every piece of equipment, and every act of generosity counts!
Every year on November 21, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Dignity and Freedom.
This day is a tribute to the brave voices and acts of ordinary Ukrainians who stood up, gave everything, and changed the course of history.
Their courage reminds us that freedom isn’t given; it’s claimed, protected and carried forward by every one of us. Let’s stand with Ukraine, remember what’s at stake, and keep working for a future built on dignity, respect and independence.
Stories from the field: Part 1
Stories from the field remind us why what we do is so important. Recently the 120th Territorial Defense Brigade shared two remarkable rescue stories made possible by ambulances you helped deliver over 28 months ago.
In the rural settlement of Shakhove, Donetsk Region, a 43-year-old service member suffered multiple severe gunshot injuries during intense fighting.
Battalion medics responded immediately, using the ambulance provided by Ukraine Focus to perform lifesaving care on the spot. Within minutes, they stabilized him with infusion therapy, occlusive dressings, splints, and pain management before racing to the nearest stabilization point in Dobropillia. The initial medical care provided in the ambulance lasted up to 10 minutes.
Doctors later confirmed the extent of his injuries: multiple shrapnel wounds, two compound fractures, a collapsed lung, and even shrapnel lodged near his heart. Incredibly, thanks to the quick work of medics and the availability of the ambulance, he survived.
Today, he is recovering in a specialized hospital. Surgeons have successfully removed the fragment near his heart, and no amputations were required. His recovery continues as a testament to what timely evacuation can mean in a war zone.
